While many people strive to obtain flawless skin, the term means something different to just about everyone. For some, it may involve eliminating acne or irritating skin conditions like eczema. Others may be more concerned about preventing or eliminating wrinkles or dark spots. Regardless of your condition, there are several ways to successfully achieve clear skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that there are two types of aging–intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is the skin’s natural aging process. It’s largely dependent upon our genes which means we have little to no control over it. Extrinsic aging, on the other hand, is caused by factors we can control such as sun exposure. Just a few minutes in the sun every day without sunscreen can cause dark spots and deep wrinkles. To combat this, apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes prior to venturing outside. If you’re staying outdoors for a lengthy period of time, reapply sunscreen every two hours.

A diet high in healthy fats and antioxidants promotes clear skin according to “The Top 10 Superfoods for Gorgeous Skin and Hair,” an article that appeared in “Fitness” magazine. Healthy fats, found in fish and nuts, reduce the appearance of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and eczema. If you’re allergic to fish, consider consulting a health care provider about trying a fish oil supplement to provide similar benefits.

Free radicals enter the body through sun exposure, poor diet, smoke and other environmental hazards. Antioxidants found mainly in fruits and vegetables attack free radicals before they can damage skin cells. Vitamins A and C, found in carrots and citrus fruits respectively, are especially helpful in keeping the skin tight, fighting wrinkles and reducing dark spots.

Over-the-Counter Products

Two of the most commonly used over-the-counter products that can eliminate acne are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, benzoyl peroxide is effective at treating inflammatory acne lesions while salicylic acid is effective at treating non-inflammatory acne such as black or white heads. Over-the-counter products containing these ingredients come in a variety of forms such as soaps, face washes, lotions, spot treatments and masks. If over-the-counter forms are unsuccessful, consider contacting a dermatologist for a stronger product.
