Skin Clearing Diet
Those who suffer from acne or other conditions that lead to blotchy skin, can try any of the skin clearing treatment options, ranging from face washes to prescription medications. For those who don't want to take medication and are looking for a natural way to clear the skin, try adjusting your diet.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it makes sense that food and drink would affect how clear the skin is, but this theory has not been proven. Researchers at the School of Applied Sciences, RMIT University in Melbourne and Victoria Australia conducted a study where 43 male patients followed a diet that was supposed to reduce acne and others ate whatever they wanted for 12 weeks. After the study, the patients who followed the diet had less lesions or acne than those who didn't. This study was published in the "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology" in 2007. The dermatologists repeated the study a second time, but this time the patients following a diet did not have less acne. This means a healthy diet may help acne but dermatologists do not know for sure. Similar research has been done for psoriasis, a condition involving red patches of skin, and dermatologists have not reached conclusive results.
Eating healthy foods can't hurt. A healthy diet provides more nutrition, which is important for keeping all parts of your body healthy, including your skin. Healthy foods include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Some supplements claim to give the body all the nutrients it needs but the American Academy of Dermatology says eating healthy is a better solution for skin problems than a supplement.
Foods to Avoid
If you suffer from rosacea, avoid alcohol, spicy foods and heated beverages because they cause flare-ups for many who suffer from the condition. If you do want to drink, avoid beer and wine because they seem to have the worst effect. If you suffer from psoriasis or acne and you think a certain food is harming your skin, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends doing your own research to see how the food affects you personally. Stop eating it and monitor what happens. If you suffer from acne, milk and refined carbohydrates may be to blame so try reducing your intake of these foods.
Health food stores sell supplements that may help the skin. Selenium is a nutrient that may help for healthy skin and this can be taken as a supplement. If you have eczema, or inflamed skin, borage oil, primrose oil, vitamin B6, vitamin E and zinc supplements could help treat it. If you have psoriasis grape seed extract, olive leaf extract and ester C may clear your skin.
The study done at RMIT University suggested that certain foods worsen skin conditions, but it has not been proven. If you are trying to clear your skin, don't rely only on diet. Talk to your dermatologist about cleansers and prescriptions. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends being careful if you are using supplements. Taking too many supplements can lead to poisoning or side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, breakouts, dizziness, difficulty breathing or fatigue. Also, supplements can have poor interactions with prescription medication.
