How to Use Things at Home to Clear Skin
Acne is a common skin condition involving the sebaceous glands, where bacteria, excess sebum--or oil--and plugged pores result in numerous pimples, otherwise known as comedones. If your acne suddenly worsens despite good home care, if you have nodules and cystic breakouts, or if you are very depressed about the appearance of your skin, you should consult a dermatologist. For mild acne, isolated blemishes and occasional patches of dull, blotchy or irritated facial skin, there are remedies you can make--using ingredients from your own kitchen--to help fight pimples as well as tone, clarify and revivify your skin.
Liquidize a small piece of peeled cucumber in a blender, and add five drops of lemon juice. Apply the mixture to the affected areas, leave on for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water. According to the Whole Foods website, the silica content in cucumbers contains both ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, which help soothe skin irritation. The lemon juice has astringent properties to help cleanse and clarify skin.
Cut a raw potato in half and rub it over the affected areas of your face. According to Acne Magazine's website, raw potato contains acids that have an antibacterial effect, as well as vitamin C. The slight roughness of the potato also acts as a mild exfoliant.
Boil 1 and 1/2 ounce of red raspberry leaves with 2 quarts of water for three minutes, and use a washcloth to wipe the cooled mixture onto the affected areas. Raspberry leaf tea, used topically, can act as an astringent on irritated skin by tightening the surface, as well as improving tissue firmness. Raspberry leaves also contain the antioxidant vitamins A and E. You can refrigerate unused mixture for later use.
Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and spread it on your face. After 30 minutes, rinse it off with lukewarm water, and pat your skin dry. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information's website, several of the the flavonoids and phenolic acids in honey, including hydrogen peroxide, act as antimicrobial agents.
Use a blender to puree 1/2 cup of ripe papaya chunks with 1 cup of sliced raw pineapple and a raw egg. Apply it to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes, and rinse. The essential enzymes in the papaya can help tone and clarify skin. Papaya also contains beta-carotene, which promotes elasticity and suppleness.
