How to Get Clear, Fair Skin

How to Get Clear, Fair Skin

Overview

Cosmetics counters are stacked ceiling-high with expensive products that promise clear, fair skin. While such products can be helpful, a skin care regimen doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. It does require a daily commitment, however. Keep in mind that biological and genetic factors influence the appearance of your skin. Taking good care of your skin with daily washing, sun protection and moisturizing can help you achieve a clearer, fairer complexion.

Step 1

Wash your face every day with warm water and a mild cleanser suitable for your skin type. Wash your face two or three times every day if you have acne or oily skin, advises Princeton University Health Services. Remove makeup before going to bed at night using a natural make-up remover or cleansing cream. Avoid harsh soaps and hot water, which can irritate the skin. Pat your skin dry and avoid rubbing.

Step 2

Apply sunscreen every morning, even if the weather is cloudy or overcast, as exposure to sunlight is the greatest threat to clear, fair skin, says the Partnership for Women's Health at Columbia University. Select a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Protect the skin from the sun with an umbrella or broad-brimmed hat. Seek the shade whenever possible.

Step 3

Control acne to attain clear, fair skin. Use skin care products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, advises the Cleveland Clinic. Use oil-free cosmetics and skin-care products.

Step 4

Use a gentle toner after cleansing your face, as a toner will shrink enlarged pores and remove traces of cleanser. Select a toner appropriate for your skin type. Avoid toners containing alcohol, which can irritate the skin and cause it to appear red and splotchy.

Step 5

Apply a moisturizer before going to bed at night and after washing and toning your face in the morning. Use a light gel or cream formulated for the skin around your eyes.

Step 6

Drink at least eight glasses of water every day to keep your skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin will prevent chapping and dryness and will keep your skin smooth, supple and dewy-fresh. Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep your skin clear and fair from the inside out, advises McKinley Health Center at University of Illinois.
