How to Clear Up Skin Acne
Acne is a skin disorder that commonly occurs during adolescence. The production of hormones causes the sebaceous glands in the skin to increase their production of an oily substance called sebum. This can clog the pores which may result in the formation of lesions on the skin. It's important to clear acne as quickly as possible so that the lesions don't develop into scars. Dermatologists can recommend a variety of topical medications for the treatment of acne.
Apply topical medications. You may apply these types of medications to the entire affected area or directly to the lesions. Topical medications are available in the form of creams, gels and lotions. They are most effective for mild acne and some acne medications require a prescription.
Kill bacteria with benzoyl peroxide. Medications that contain benzoyl peroxide work primarily by killing the bacteria that can aggravate acne. Benzoyl peroxide introduces oxygen into the pores which inhibits the growth of these bacteria, which thrive in low-oxygen environments.
Treat blackheads and whiteheads. Medications that contain resorcinol and sulfur are available over the counter and can be effective in breaking down whiteheads and blackheads.
Apply medications with salicylic acid to unclog pores. These medications treat acne by reducing the number of cells that are shed in the follicles of the sebaceous glands. This can help clear blocked pores.
Use over-the-counter acne medications regularly over a prolonged period of time. You generally need to use the medications every day and they typically require at least eight weeks to produce a visible improvement. The side effects of acne medication most commonly include burning, irritation and redness of the treated area. These effects may lessen as you continue to use them and you should report severe side effects to your dermatologist.
