How to Clear Spotty Skin

Overview

Spotty skin, or acne, usually occurs when an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands becomes trapped underneath the skin and triggers the growth of a certain kind of bacteria. The tissues surrounding the bacteria become inflamed, causing eruptions to appear on the skin in the form of pimples. A variety of treatments can help clear up spotty skin, but you may have to try different ones to find one that works for you.

Step 1

Wash your face. The American Academy of Dermatology advises washing your face once or twice a day to help keep excess oil and dead skin from clogging your pores. Gently massage your face with a mild cleanser in a circular motion. Don't scrub or treat the skin roughly, as that can irritate your delicate tissues.

Step 2

Apply acne-fighting products to skin. Certain over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur can kill the bacteria causing the acne outbreak. You should apply these products only to clean skin with clean hands. If your acne is severe, you may want to consult a dermatologist, who can prescribe oral antibiotics such as tetracycline and erythromycin to kill the acne-causing bacteria.

Step 3

Minimize your exposure to oil. You can avoid worsening or perpetuating an additional acne outbreak by reducing the amount of oil on your skin. AcneNet.com recommends keeping your hands away from your face, making sure that your hair doesn't touch your skin, and washing your hair daily, if it tends toward oiliness.

Step 4

Eat healthy foods. While studies have not found a definitive link between eating junk food and acne outbreaks, new studies have established a connection between acne and eating a high glycemic diet. According to a 2007 study published in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" and led by Robyn Smith, acne-sufferers on a low-glycemic diet showed a substantially larger reduction of spots than those acne patients on a high-glycemic diet. Low-glycemic foods include whole grain foods, cruciferous and dark leafy green vegetables, and certain fruits such as cherries, plums, grapefruit and peaches.
