Overview

Your skin provides a protective layer for your body, allows your body to cool itself through perspiration and often plays a valued role personal appearance. Numerous conditions may affect the health and appearance of your skin, of which acne is the most common, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In addition to positive skin hygiene and medical treatments, when needed, a healthy dietary lifestyle, inclusive of certain foods, promotes clear, healthy skin.

Fish

Fish provide rich amounts of protein and nutrients important for skin health, including zinc. Zinc is important for proper wound healing and, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, may help reduce the effects of acne. Fatty fish, such as salmon, albacore tuna, herring, lake trout, flounder, halibut, mackerel and sardines, are prime sources of omega-3 fatty acids -- healthy fats that may reduce inflammation associated with skin conditions. For heightened wellness benefits, choose fish over protein sources high in saturated fat, such as red meat, routinely.

Fresh Fruits

Fresh fruits provide valuable amounts of antioxidants -- nutrients that help your body protect itself from diseases and infections. As hydrating foods, fresh fruits may also help reduce inflammation and promote smooth, supple skin. If you have a flaky skin condition known as eczema, author of "The Healthy Skin Diet" Karen Fischer recommends avoiding citrus fruits and dried fruits with added preservatives, which may worsen your symptoms. Otherwise, incorporate a variety of colorful fruits into your diet. Orange fruits, such as cantaloupe, mango, papaya, apricots and nectarines, provide vitamin A -- a nutrient that contains properties similar to those of certain acne-reducing drugs.

Vegetables

Vegetables, like fruits, are valuable sources of antioxidants and fiber. Eating a diet low in vegetables, according to Fischer, increases your risk for an assortment of skin conditions, including acne and skin damage associated with sun exposure. Orange and green vegetables, including carrots, spinach, kale and broccoli, are significant sources of vitamin A. For improved skin and overall wellness, try to incorporate vegetables into most of your meals. Replace processed snack foods with fresh cut or steamed vegetables regularly for added benefits.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are grains that have not been stripped of nutrients or fiber during food processing. As a result, they digest more slowly than refined grains, such as white flour, and may improve your hormone and blood sugar levels. These attributes are important since hormonal shifts may contribute to acne. Whole grains are also valuable sources of B vitamins -- several of which help prevent skin disorders, particularly those around your mouth, nose and lips, according to the American Skin Association. Examples of nutritious whole grain foods include 100 percent whole grain breads, pasta and cold cereals, oatmeal, brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley soup and air-popped popcorn.
