When the opening of a pore gets clogged with dirt, oil or any other particle, it can create comedones, or whiteheads and blackheads. These skin imperfections can easily be treated. In some cases it is important to combine medication with a change in behavior or diet. Depending on the reason for the blackhead, many treatment options may be effective. In most cases, improving hygiene can quickly remedy the situation. The advice of a dermatologist or other medical professional may be the only way to obtain certain medications for stubborn blackheads.

Topical Treatments

Topical treatments are applied on the surface of the skin. There are many products available over-the-counter and by way of prescription than can be effective in ridding your face of blackheads. In most cases, mild acne will respond to the over-the-counter medications very well. Prescription topical treatments work by encouraging new cell development and reducing the likelihood of clogged pores or hair follicles. Other treatments actually kill skin bacteria that causes blackheads.

Oral Medication

An antibiotic may be prescribed for severe or stubborn acne. This medication will help fight the excess bacteria causing the acne. It can also reduce inflammation of the skin to make the acne less noticeable. Often, oral treatment is combined with topical products.

Dermatologic Procedures

In some instances, it may be necessary to undergo a dermatologic procedure to fight the acne. These procedures are more costly and painful but may be the best choice for some people. Laser or light therapy can be applied to treat the pores at the deepest level. The laser can damage the oil-producing glands to limit the amount of oil on the skin. Less painful methods can include chemical peels or microdermabrasion. These practices work by removing several layers of the skin to help rid the skin of the clogged pores and to clean out underlying follicles.
