Treatments for Severe Blackheads Treatments for Severe Blackheads Treatments for Severe Blackheads

Blackheads are a form of acne that occurs when oil and dead skin cells become lodged in the pores of the skin. Severe blackheads are often difficult to remove and breakouts may cover large areas of the face. There are at-home remedies along with dermatological treatments for severe blackheads.

Blackhead Extractor

Blackhead extractors are stainless steel tools used to push the blackhead out of the follicle on the skin's surface. The end of the extractor is placed over the blackhead and then gently pressed into the skin. The blackhead emerges from the pore and removed with a clean tissue. If multiple blackheads are present, the extractor should be sterilized with an alcohol wipe between uses. Scarring and bleeding can occur if the blackhead extractor is not used properly.

Exfoliation Products

Exfoliating scrubs away the severe blackheads as well as controls the oil on the surface of the skin that causes the breakouts. A gentle exfoliating scrub can get rid of blackheads when used on a daily basis. Microdermabrasion treatments also exfoliate dead skin cells and oil to get rid of severe blackheads. Topical treatments that contain alpha-hydroxy acids also have the ability to slough off dead skin cells and reduce oil in order to remove blackheads. Exfoliating products may cause skin irritation and redness.

Topical Vitamin A

The website DermaDoctor.com recommends treating blackheads with topical vitamin A. When applied to the skin, the topical vitamin A treatment loosens the blackhead and helps pull it out of the skin. Vitamin A is available by prescription or in over-the-counter solutions. Prescription brands of topical vitamin A include Retin-A, Differin and Avita. Retinol is an example of an over-the-counter vitamin A treatment for blackheads. Since skin sensitivity is a side effect of vitamin A products, sunscreen should be worn.
