Natural Treatment for Blackheads
According to the Mayo Clinic, blackheads are open comedones. Comedones are pores, or hair follicles, obstructed by dead skin and excess oil. As these substances accumulate, they form what is often called a soft plug. Oxidation causes a darkening to the plug, which is where this type of acne vulgaris gets its name. While there are many medicinal treatments to help improve the appearance of your skin, there are natural treatments that may also provide results.
Wash the skin with a gentle soap. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you wash problem areas of the skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day. Look for products that are fragrance-free as well as non-comedogenic, which means they won't cause acne. Wash the face in the morning and before bed.
Pick up some tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a hydrophobic essential oil that has been shown to effectively treat mild to moderate acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. This natural oil is most effective in a 5-percent concentration. Apply directly to blackheads twice a day for best results.
Start taking a zinc supplement. Though research is still limited on whether or not zinc can effectively treat acne, the Mayo Clinic maintains that it has been effectual in improving the appearance of the skin.
Try supplementing your diet with brewer's yeast. The living culture in this supplement is said to kill the bacteria responsible for acne. When taken daily, you may experience an improvement in your skin and even prevent additional breakouts.
Avoid using oil-based skin-care products. Not only be aware of the makeup you're wearing, but also any moisturizers or sunscreens you apply to the skin. Oil-based products can compound the problem, further clogging pores and worsening your condition.
Take note of everything that touches your skin. Hats, headbands, glasses and clothing can all trap heat, moisture, dead skin and oil next to the skin, prompting the formation of blackheads. Make sure to clean any item after use.
