Overview

Blackheads occur when pores open to the skin's surface and become clogged with oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. In most cases, following a simple care routine to keep the skin clean and free of dirt will prevent the occurrence of blackheads. When they do appear, however, natural help exists in the form of herbs, oils and other natural materials that fight bacteria, remove embedded dirt and open the pores to make extracting blackheads easier.

Step 1

Perform an herbal facial steam to get rid of blackheads. Place 1 cup of dried herbs in a large pot of water, bring to a slow simmer, then remove from the heat and place on a flat, sturdy surface where you can comfortably lean over the water. Drape a towel over your head, creating a tent over the pot, and soak in the steam for about 15 minutes. In the book "Natural Remedies," the Prevention Health Books Staff recommend using dried elder flower, yarrow or chamomile in an herbal steam for blackheads.

Step 2

Combine equal parts finely ground oatmeal and finely ground almonds to make a blackhead scrub. These ingredients gently exfoliate and help remove embedded dirt, bacteria and blackheads. To use, place 1 tsp. of the mixture into the palm of your hand and add about 1/2 tsp. water, or enough to make a soft paste. Spread the scrub over your face, or wherever the blackheads are located, and rub gently into the skin. Rinse well with warm water. Repeat daily for the best results, or just after an herbal steam.

Step 3

Make an herbal face oil to combat blackheads and prevent them from developing. Combine 20 to 30 drops essential oil with 2 tbsp. almond oil and massage into the face twice per day, morning and night. In her book "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," Valerie Ann Worwood recommends lemongrass, lavender, clary-sage or violet leaf essential oils for treating blackheads. This treatment works especially well after you've performed an herbal steam and removed your blackheads.

Step 4

Wash your face daily with a gentle, natural cleanser to prevent blackheads from occurring and treat those that already exist. Natural treatments won't provide much benefit if you don't keep your face clean. The Mayo Clinic recommends keeping your hair clean and off your face, not resting your hands on your face and avoiding tight clothing and hats when you expect to sweat. Following these guidelines should also help in your fight against blackheads.
