Birth control pills are often administered to help people who are suffering from severe acne and for whom all tried and tested methods have failed to produce any specific results.

The pills help in removing excessive sebum and is administered with other acne treatments  Though they do tend to be effective, these medications also have side affects and thus they are not suited for everyone out there. It is given only to women under the age of 35, have a healthy medical history and do not smoke. Other than that, people who intend to take birth control pills to help acne need to know if they are suitable for the medication or not.

They are three major birth control pills approved by the Food and Drug Association of the US as medications safe for acne control. These are a combination of estrogen and progestin and are administered to women who face severe acne problems.

  • Ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate (ortho tri cyclen)
  • Ethinyl estragiol and norethindrone (Estrostep)
  • Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (Yaz)

These pills aim to control the sebum which is the oily substance that lubricates the hair and skin. Sometimes the sebum is formed in excessive amounts and it clogs the pores of the skin and hair follicle. This causes dead cells to stay on the skin and more oil is accumulated, which then attracts bacteria and trigger inflammation and infection.

These birth control pills work by targeting the sebum and reduce the amount of oil produced. It is therefore given with other creams and ointments, as though it prevents the onset of acne, the current ones do need other medicated creams to be diminished. The birth control pills may take several months before it can actually be showing any positive results and patients must follow a rigid plan as prescribed by the doctor. Skipping on it and then taking it off and on will do no help; instead it can also cause the acne to keep on recurring and the skin may get worse before it actually gets better.
