Acne varies in severity from person to person. While many people can clear their acne with minimal effort, some people may need to use an acne-fighting regimen in order to clear their skin. A acne routine should involve washing the face without inflaming the skin, applying an effective acne cream and deeply moisturizing the skin.

Mild Cleansers

Skin affected by acne is already inflamed. If soaps and cleansers are applied to skin that is already irritated, it can exacerbate acne and worsen it. An effective acne routine should include using a soap designed for sensitive skin types, which will clean the skin without irritating it. Lather your skin well with the soap, then rinse completely with water. Avoid scrubbing. Your hands should be as gentle as possible on the skin.

2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Using the highest strength of benzoyl peroxide cream may seem logical, as benzoyl peroxide is one of the most powerful acne-fighters on the market. However, using a higher strength cream can actually be counterproductive, as it can actually cause the skin to overproduce skin oils in order to compensate for the drying nature of the cream. It can also cause irritation and burning. Using the lowest strength cream routinely (no higher than 2.5%) will powerfully clear the skin and keep it that way. Spread a pea-sized amount onto your skin twice a day until absorbed. For a strong acne-fighting treatment, use 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream in the morning and again at night. Avoid applying benzoyl peroxide creams around the delicate skin near the eyes.

Oil-Free Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

Neglecting a moisturizer is a common mistake that people make when treating their acne. Many people think that using a moisturizer will clog the pores, but it actually helps you have clearer skin that is also soft and supple. Only use an oil-free moisturizer that is formulated for sensitive skin types, so that it will not clog the pores or irritate the skin. A sensitive-skin moisturizer will not contain harsh chemical ingredients and can be used without exacerbating acne. Spread a dime-sized amount of moisturizer onto your skin twice a day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream, again avoiding the eye area.
