Alternative Treatments for a UTI

Alternative Treatments for a UTI

Every year, 8 million cases of urinary tract infections are reported. Most afflict women. A UTI is a bacterial infection that may be anywhere in the urinary system from the bladder to the kidneys. Both urethra and bladder infections are common and may be activated by anything from sexual intercourse to improperly wiping after a bowel movement. If the UTI is discovered early enough, it can be treated with a variety of natural methods. Prevention, treatment and aftercare are all part of a complete response to UTIs.

Prevention

You can help prevent UTIs by drinking small amounts of unsweetened cranberry juice regularly. Use real cranberry juice rather than watered-down or flavored juice for best effect. Cranberry juice has plenty of Vitamin C as well as an infection-fighting element called proanthocyanin. This substance helps release bacteria from the urinary tract walls.

Hydration Therapy

You can fight off UTIs off with plenty of fluids to keep your system hydrated. This is a before, during and after approach that the staff at the Mayo Clinic asserts may be as helpful as cranberry juice.

Bathing Methods

Showering instead of taking a bath is one way to help avoid getting a UTI if you seem especially susceptible. Be gentle washing vagina and anus areas so as not to irritate the skin and use gentle, non-aromatic soaps.

Wiping Away

Be sure to wipe from front to back after defecating. Urinate as soon as you feel the need instead of trying to hold it back. Also avoid feminine sprays or deodorants that may further irritate your delicate membrane around the vagina.
