How to Get Rid of Red Spots From Pimples

How to Get Rid of Red Spots From Pimples

Overview

After pimples heal, they can leave behind unattractive red spots. The American Academy of Dermatology indicates that this skin discoloration is known as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Even those with darker skin tones may notice brown spots on the spot where a pimple formed. The AAD states that red spots from pimples are not scars, and over time they will fade. However, there are measures that you can take to speed things along.

Step 1

Use sunscreen daily, even if you have dark or black skin. The AAD notes that the sun can cause red spots from pimples to darken. To get the best results, use a dermatologist-recommended sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Apply it 20 minutes before going outdoors to your face, neck and all other areas of the skin that will be exposed to sunlight. The AAD stresses that regardless of how you choose to address hyperpigmentation, using sunscreen is an absolute must.

Step 2

Choose an over-the-counter topical cream or lotion that contains hydroquinone, which gently bleaches red spots. The AAD notes that by law, drugstore products cannot contain more than two percent hydroquinone (a dermatologist can prescribe a stronger bleaching cream). The AAD urges you to read the product's labeling carefully to find out how much hydroquinone is in the product. If the label doesn't specify, don't use it.

Step 3

Consult with a dermatologist if post-acne red spots are problematic. The AAD notes that your doctor may prescribe a stronger topical treatment with a combination of active ingredients to help hyperpigmentation resolve more quickly. Alternately, he or she may recommend an in-office procedure, such as a light chemical peel, microdermabrasion or laser treatments.
