Chest acne is a common problem and one that can be embarrassing to deal with. Chest acne can affect the types of clothing you choose and your confidence at the gym or beach. Acne is a common problem, with about 85 percent of Americans suffering from acne at some point, according to the American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA). The chest, along with the face and back, are the most common areas for acne to develop. There are many different types of acne treatments available that are effective against acne on the chest.
Any type of acne that develops on the chest is chest acne. While chest acne can include blackheads or whiteheads, the most common form is a pimple, which is actually an inflamed blackhead or whitehead, according to the AFPA. A pimple is an elevated red spot on the skin, and, if it doesn't rupture, can continue to enlarge under the skin and develop into a cyst.
As the name implies, chest acne is located on the chest. The skin on the chest is not typically as sensitive as the skin on the face so many people do not treat it as carefully as they do their face. If you notice acne developing on your chest, treat it as you would acne on your face, with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
Clothing rubbing against the skin often creates or worsens acne. Wear loose-fitting, natural-fiber shirts to reduce the likelihood of developing acne on your chest. Don't make the mistake of over-treating acne; harsh or overly frequent cleansing can actually worsen the condition, according to Rutgers University.
Because the skin on the chest is not as sensitive as the skin on the face, it may seem like the two areas require different treatment. Acne is the same skin condition whether it is on the face or the chest. Removing the dead skin cells that are blocking the pores and drying the excess sebum will treat acne regardless of where it is located.
There is no need to get a special cleanser for the chest, wash your chest twice a day with an acne cleanser and follow up with an oil-free moisturizer. Apply sunscreen before heading outside, as some acne medications can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. As with acne on the face, do not pick at or squeeze the pimples.
