A Good Soap for Acne
Using the proper soap for acne skin care is important. Acne is not caused by dirty skin or surface oil so there is no need to use harsh soap, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Select a gentle soap that is intended for sensitive skin or is designated for the treatment of acne.
Harsh or abrasive soaps can irritate acne and make it worse. Oil based soaps can contribute to clogged pores. Skin with acne should be washed with a mild soap or acne soap that is free of oil, alcohol and abrasives.
Acne soaps recommended by the Face and Skin Center at University of Mississippi Health Care include Purpose, Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser and Neutrogena oil-free acne wash, for washing oily or combination skin. Salac Wash, unscented Dove, Cetaphil antibacterial soap and Cetaphil gentle cleansing bar or cleanser are recommended for sensitive skin that is less oily.
Wash skin twice daily with the acne soap being careful not to scrub or irritate the skin. Wellesley College Health Service advises on its website that the face be washed using the fingertips rather than a wash cloth or sponge. Use warm water to thoroughly rinse the skin and then pat dry.
In addition to washing with acne soap twice daily, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing as soon as possible after heavy sweating because perspiration can make acne worse. Wash the entire face all the way to the hairline especially after wearing a hat that causes increased perspiration.
After washing the face with a mild cleanser, glycolic acid products can be applied to the skin as these help reduce blackheads and whiteheads. Then the skin is ready for topical medications like benzoyl peroxide or Retin-A.
If dry skin is a problem, use a noncomedogenic lotion such as Neutrogena, Purpose or Oil of Olay Complete, on the dry patches as recommended by the Face and Skin Center at University of Mississippi Health Care.
