Acne affects 80 percent of teenagers and many adults, according to the Nemours hospital network. A variety of remedies are available, although the American Academy of Dermatology says they can take several weeks to make a noticeable difference. Some can be purchased at drugstores, while others must be prescribed by a dermatologist or other physician.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a common over-the-counter acne remedy. The Academy of Dermatology says it kills acne-causing bacteria. It is available in varying strengths for mild to moderate acne, and it can be purchased in lotions, gels, washes and cleaners. Stronger versions are available by prescription. Some products combine benzoyl peroxide with other ingredients that dry up oil and promote the sloughing of skin cells to keep pores open.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is an over-the-counter acne product that is most commonly sold on medicated pads, according to the Acne.org information website. It prevents excess cells from mixing with oil and plugging the pores. It also breaks down pimples. Acne.org warns against combining it with other over-the-counter remedies, as that can cause irritation.

Retinoids

A doctor may prescribe retinoids when over-the-counter remedies do not work, according to the Mayo Clinic. They are a vitamin A derivative, according to the Academy of Dermatology. They come in lotion form and speed up skin cell turnover, which helps prevent clogging of the pores.

Antibiotics

Prescription antibiotics in cream or oral form are sometimes used for stubborn acne. They target a bacteria called P. acnes, which combines with deal skin cells and excess sebum to worsen acne. Topical antibiotics are often mixed with other remedies such as benzoyl peroxide in prescription creams.

Face Washing

Proper face washing will help get rid of your pimples, but doing it incorrectly can irritate and worsen them. Acne.org advises choosing a mild, oil-free face cleanser. Limit face washing to twice a day. Do it in the morning and evening, spending no more than 10 seconds washing with your bare hands. Do not scrub or use a wash cloth, and gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel when you are done.
