Diet Pills That Attack Fat


While many diet pills suppress the appetite, a couple of choices can, in effect, attack fat in your food and stop it from being digested, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. If you are tired of even low-fat foods adding unwanted weight to your body, you might consider trying the over-the-counter or prescription lipase inhibitor orlistat.

How it Works

When you eat meals containing fat and take a dose of orlistat, the drug releases a lipase inhibitor that blocks fat from being digested. Instead of going into your body, the fat from the food leaves your body through stools. But orlistat does not give you a license to eat fatty foods all of the time; the risk of unpleasant side effects rises if you eat meals with more than 15 g of fat.

Over-the-Counter Orlistat

You can buy orlistat over the counter under the brand name Alli, notes the Mayo Clinic. Alli consists of 60 mg of orlistat; the drug is not suitable for pregnant women, nursing women, people with serious medical problems or anyone under the age of 18. If you take Alli, exercise and eat low-fat meals, you will probably lose 3 to 5 lbs more each year than you would have with just dietary changes and increased exercise.

Prescription Orlistat

If you want a stronger boost to your weight loss efforts and do not have serious health problems, ask your doctor for the Xenical prescription version of orlistat. Xenical contains 120 mg of orlistat and can be taken up to three times daily. If you eat a meal without fat or a very low-fat meal, you can skip your Xenical dose. You can safely use orlistat for up to two years, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Potential Side Effects

You risk suffering from embarrassing bowel accidents if you do not use orlistat properly, warns the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. If you eat high-fat meals while taking orlistat, you are much more likely to experience uncontrollable bowel movements, gas that leaves oily spotting on your underwear, rectal pain and stomach pain. Also, some orlistat users alleged that the drug caused serious liver injuries; if you become jaundiced or pass light-colored stools or dark-colored urine, you should seek immediate medical attention.
