Acne Medicine for Body Acne
Treating body acne isn't the same as treating acne on your face. While you may use some of the same medications, the concentrations of these medications and approaches toward treatment are different. For starters, the skin on your body is thicker than the skin on your face and can withstand stronger treatments. But there's much more to what you need to know about body acne before you can seek out appropriate medication.
Body acne is very similar to acne on your face. It consists of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, nodules and even cysts. It can appear on your neck, back, chest and shoulders most commonly, though it can appear anywhere on your body and can interfere with your quality of life. It's often genetic, though lifestyle factors such as physical activity level, bathing frequency and skin sensitivity also contribute to its development.
Cleansing is often the best medicine for body acne. Taking a shower daily and washing using a gentle cleanser can help remove the dirt, oil and dead skin cells that can cause acne. A slightly medicated cleanser that contains salicylic acid or other alpha hydroxy acid can help clear out your pores and heal current acne lesions.
Benzoyl peroxide is a common acne treatment ingredient for the face and for the body. However, you can typically use a higher concentration on the body since the skin is thicker. Even so, don't use a concentration of higher than 5 percent when starting treatment with a benzoyl peroxide-based cleanser or cream. Doing so could dry out your skin or make your body acne worse.
Acne medication for your body acne can only do so much. You'll need to adopt new lifestyle habits as well if you want to see a change in your skin. Don't rub or pick at your blemishes and try to shower or at least change your clothes after sweating. Avoid lotions, creams or laundry detergents that irritate your skin and steer clear of rough fabrics.
While body acne usually clears up using these straightforward methods, you might need a prescription treatment to clear up your body acne for once and for all. For severe cystic acne, Accutane is usually prescribed. This drug is an oral treatment taken for a course that lasts several weeks. Although effective at eliminating acne, it can also permanently dry out your skin, and it carries serious side effects like depression and suicidal thoughts.
