Solodyn Medication for Acne Solodyn Medication for Acne

Manufactured by Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation, Solodyn is an extended-release form of the oral antibiotic minocycline. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Solodyn for treating certain types of acne. The extended-release quality may prevent some side effects, and it's also more convenient because you only take it once a day. Solodyn is available by prescription only.

Non-inflammatory acne involves whiteheads and blackheads, blemishes that dermatologists call comedones. Inflammatory acne, in contrast, is characterized by small or large red pimples that may be filled with pus. Severe cases of acne can cause pus-filled cysts and solid nodules deep under the skin. Severe acne can be painful and disfiguring, and it can cause scarring. Solodyn is approved to treat moderate-to-severe non-nodular inflammatory acne. In clinical studies, this medication did not work for whiteheads or blackheads, according to the Solodyn official website.

Minocycline is derived from the antibiotic tetracycline. It inhibits the growth and reproduction of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. This helps prevent future breakouts and decreases inflammation. People with acne that has not responded to other antibiotics often have success with minocycline, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Minocycline also appears to be less associated with antibiotic resistance than other antibiotics commonly prescribed for acne therapy.

As an extended-release version of minocycline, Solodyn is taken once per day, usually for 12 weeks. You can take the medicine whenever it's most convenient for you, although you should take it at the same time each day, according to the official website. Swallow Solodyn whole with 8 oz. of water, and don't break, chew or crush the tablet, as that will release too much minocycline at once. Solodyn is available in different strengths, and your doctor will prescribe the strength best for you.

Side Effects

Side effects most likely with Solodyn use are headache, dizziness, tiredness and itching, according to the official website. As with most antibiotics, Solodyn can cause colitis either during or after treatment, although this is uncommon. The primary symptom of colitis is severe diarrhea, and the condition calls for immediate medical attention. Solodyn also can increase sensitivity to ultraviolet light, which increases the risk of sunburn.

Solodyn can make birth control pills less effective. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may not be able to safely take Solodyn. The drug may increase the risk of harm to a baby, including permanent discoloration of teeth later in life and negative effects on bone development, according to
