Acne, a disorder of the sebaceous glands, is an inflammatory condition linked to the entrapment of a sebaceous gland (located beneath a hair follicle) with natural oils and, resulting in inflammation and an accumulation of bacteria.

The onset of acne is usually early adolescence; however, adult-onset acne is becoming increasingly common with today's Western diet and busy lifestyle. Symptoms may worsen during periods of hormonal changes, stress, poor hygiene, diet and, drug use such as the use of contraceptives, drawing emphasis to prevention.

Prevention

Drink two glasses of raw juice daily by using any combination of carrots, beets, lettuce (other than iceberg), cucumbers and spinach. Getting adequate amounts of vitamins A, C, E and zinc will help restore internal imbalances and increase skin vitality, lessening the chance of pimple formation.

Cleansing

Deep skin cleansing is essential for healthy, acne-free skin. Facial steaming using natural herbs is an excellent way of preventing the accumulation of bacteria and onset of acne. Use a facial steam once a week for 10 to 15 minutes to improve blood circulation and aid the detoxification process. By increasing oxygenation to the skin, steaming enhances the delivery of water and nutrients to the skin assisting in the unclogging and opening of pores. Add 5 to 6 drops of tea tree oil (Melaluca alternifolia) for significant antimicrobial action. Other useful herbs include lavender, red clover, strawberry leaves and chamomile.

Natural Facial Masks

Whisked egg yolk or, egg whites with lemon juice, applied as a paste for 10 to 15 minutes helps clear the skin and prevent pimple formation. From the richest sources of Vitamin A, egg yolks aid in the regulation of skin cell production and shedding and the inhibition of oil production.

Turmeric and sandalwood paste is a great home remedy for scar removal and prevention of acne outbreaks. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of each with water into a paste.

Grated or sliced cucumber soaked in rum, prevents pimples and blackheads.
