Pores are tiny openings in the skin that exude oil to protect and lubricate the skin’s surface. During puberty, hormones cause the pores to enlarge in order to support the excess oil produced. Unfortunately, because of genetics, bacteria growth or a buildup of dead skin cells, large pores can become a problem even after puberty. But there are a variety of ways to help treat and remedy their appearance.

Use Concealer

“The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women” recommends reducing pore size with a concealer. Begin by smoothing on a lotion that is specifically designed to minimize pores. Be sure that it is oil-free and noncomedogenic, meaning it will not clog any pores. Many lotions go on as a liquid but evaporate, leaving powder in the pores.

Carole Walderman, the director for Matrix Skin Care Products in Ohio, says this process is similar to “applying putty to a hole in the wall.” After allowing the lotion to dry, smooth on a foundation that is water-based.

Control Oil

According to the Beauty Brains website, oil can contribute to the appearance of pores, making them look larger. Try blotting your skin frequently with oil-absorbing sheets or cleansing cloths. There are also certain brands of makeup that are specifically designed to absorb oil.

In addition to these oil-control methods, the Mayo Clinic notes to make sure you keep your hands and hair away from your face. Wash with a gentle cleanser twice a day to remove excess oil. Avoid greasy or oil-based cosmetics. Instead, choose those that are noncomedogenic and oil-free.

Reduce Sun Exposure

Because exposure to the sun can thicken cells of the skin, making the pore edges appear bigger, it is important to limit exposure to the sun. The KidsHealth website suggests wearing proper clothing in the sun, making sure that it covers the entire body. Wear wide-brim hats and set up an umbrella to create a shady area to sit under.

Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher every time you are in the sun. Pick a broad-spectrum sun block, meaning that it blocks UVA and UVB rays. Choose a waterproof and sweatproof formula so that it does not come off through vigorous activity, hot weather or swimming. Don't forget to apply it on your ears, feet and shoulders as well as on the back of your neck.
