Overview

Acne is caused by a buildup of the skin's natural oils, skin cells and bacteria beneath the surface of the skin. A comprehensive skin-care routine including cleansing, moisturizing and toning works slowly to reduce the appearance of acne. A home remedy cleanser removes dead skin and dirt, while a moisturizing mask soothes the skin. A homemade toner closes the pores temporarily, preventing more debris from entering the pores. Home remedies are not a substitute for professional treatment--speak to your doctor or dermatologist if you have concerns about the condition of your skin or if your acne worsens or is severe.

Sea Salt Scrub

Step 1

Mix 1 tsp. of fine sea salt with a 1 1/2 tbsp. of water. Sea salt is an exfoliating ingredient that sloughs away dead skin cells, which may build up within pores, clogging them. Sea salt also has rumored healing benefits, as noted in "Natural Beauty Recipes at Home"

Step 2

Apply the mixture to your face, rubbing in small circles. If the mixture feels too harsh, add more water to dissolve more of the sea salt grains.

Step 3

Rinse your face thoroughly with room temperature or slightly warm water after scrubbing. Moisturize and tone after cleansing.

Moisturizing Acne Mask

Step 1

Remove the stems from four strawberries. Strawberries, according to beauty expert Janice Cox in "Natural Beauty at Home" contain salicylic acid, an active ingredient in many over-the-counter acne products.

Step 2

Blend the strawberries with 1 tsp. of honey. According to a February 1999 study published in the "Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine," honey is a natural antibacterial agent. It also moisturizes the face. Use real honey--avoid sugary syrup labeled as honey.

Step 3

Add 1/2 an avocado to the mixture and blend until the mixture is a creamy paste. Avocado provides moisture, while natural acids in the fruit peel away skin cells. Avocado is also purported to even out inconsistencies and red tones in the complexion, as noted in "Naturally Skinsational."

Step 4

Apply the mixture to your face, avoiding your eyes, nose and mouth. Allow the mixture to sit for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 5

Rinse your face using lukewarm water. If your face feels too oily or any mixture remains, use a small amount of sea salt scrub to remove it. Tone your face after moisturizing.

Tea Tree Oil Toner

Step 1

Warm 2 cups of distilled water in the microwave--do not bring the water to a boil. The water should be slightly above room temperature.

Step 2

Pick an essential oil to add to your toner--choose one based upon the scent or properties. Lavender is a soothing scent, while citrus oils are invigorating. Both work to remove excess oil from the face, as noted in "The Herbal Body Book." Chamomile soothes inflammation. Add up to six drops of your chosen oil.

Step 3

Use six drops of essential oil total if you plan to use more than one essential oil. Add 15 drops of tea tree oil to the mixture. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent and toner, and is recommended as an alternative treatment for acne by the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Place the mixture in a sealed glass jar. Shake the jar vigorously to ensure an even distribution of water and oil.

Step 5

Apply the mixture to your face and rinse using cool water. Avoid getting the mixture in your eyes, nose or mouth. If the natural acne toner comes into contact with your eyes, flush with cool, running water for 15 minutes.
