Overview

If you suffer from acne, using an oil-controlling, homemade facial mask once or twice a week can help clear up those pesky pimples. While store-bought masks can help as well, making your own mask ensures that you know exactly what you’re putting on your face and often saves you money because many zit-zapping ingredients are common kitchen items. Masks that contain egg whites can help fade red or dark spots left from previous breakouts since it acts as a bleaching agent, explains Julie Gabriel, author of “Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for Acne.” They also help absorb excess oil that can lead to breakouts. Oatmeal can help soothe trouble complexions, and onions help discourage the overproduction of collagen that can lead to scarring.

Egg, Honey and Oatmeal Mask

Step 1

Mix 1 egg yolk, 1 tbsp. of honey, 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1/2 cup plain uncooked oatmeal in a medium-sized bowl. Fold the oatmeal into the wet ingredients to create a thick mask.

Step 2

Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry. Rub the mask over your face and allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes to help soak up excess oil, recommends "Fitness" magazine.

Step 3

Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and follow with your normal skin care routine.

Zesty Egg White Mask

Step 1

Crack an egg over a bowl and gently spoon out the yolk to leave the egg whites. Use a fork or whisk to beat the whites thoroughly.

Step 2

Add the juice from half of a fresh lemon or 2 tbsp. of store-bought lemon juice to the egg whites. Mix the ingredients together until they form a thick paste.

Step 3

Wash and dry your face and spread the mixture over your skin, allowing it to dry for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the mask with warm water and follow with your normal skin care routine. The egg whites may be sticky when they dry. Use your fingertips or a clean washcloth to gently rub the mixture off your skin if rinsing alone is insufficient.

Oatmeal-Onion Mask

Step 1

Cook 1/2 c. of plain oatmeal according to the directions on the package. Spoon it into a small bowl and set it aside to cool.

Step 2

Peel a medium-sized onion and cut it into small pieces. Place the onion in a food processor and blend it until it resembles a smooth paste. If you don’t have a food processor, add 1 or 2 tbsp. of warm water and place the onions in a powerful blender until you achieve the desired consistency.

Step 3

Mix the onion paste into the warm oatmeal. Fold the ingredients together until they are mixed well.

Step 4

Rub the mask over your skin, avoiding your nostrils and eyes after washing your face. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
