Any kind of acne is bad, but severe acne can be defined as acne that covers large areas of skin or is in the form of cysts and nodules. It requires a lot of discipline and consistent behaviors to treat acne. If discipline is applied, home remedies will get rid of bad acne.

Wash

The skin should be washed every day, though no more than twice daily. Over-washing can irritate the skin, resulting in more acne, as can scrubbers, harsh soaps and rubbing the skin dry. Dr. Weil recommends using glycerin soap for a cleanser and patting it dry with a fresh, clean towel. You can even make your own glycerin soap and add some herbs such as lavender or neem to help treat the acne.

Treat

Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic that is effective in the treatment of acne. The Mayo Clinic reports tea tree oil has been found to be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide. When pores get clogged, oil backs up, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Tea tree oil helps to kill the bacteria, thus reducing the acne. A treatment containing 5 percent tea tree oil should be applied to clean, dry skin.

Boost

Give your immune system a boost to help treat the acne, and help the skin tissues renew and repair themselves. The Mayo Clinic recommends taking the antioxidant zinc to help to boost your immune system and get rid of acne. Dr. Andrew Weil recommends increasing foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants that help to bring the skin to optimal health are vitamins A, C, E and zinc. The whole vitamin B group is also important to help give the skin a boost and get rid of acne.

Clean

Clean doesn’t mean washing your face. Instead, it means keeping everything around and on the acne- prone skin clean. Clothes should be clean and made of breathable material such as cotton. Keep hair pulled back. Longer hair can transfer dirt, oil and hair-care products onto acne-prone skin. Keep your hands away from acne-prone skin, as they can also transfer dirt and oils, and picking at acne can make the infection worse and lead to scarring.

Hydrate

Drink appropriate amounts of water to keep your skin cells plump and healthy. Without the proper hydration, skin cells are deflated with diminished structure and function. Water also helps to flush all toxins away from the skin to help keep the skin clean.
