Home Remedies for Teen Acne
Nearly 80 percent of adolescents have at least some degree of acne and more than 40 percent will have acne or acne scarring serious enough to warrant professional treatment, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Pimples, blackheads and whiteheads are so common during the teen years that they're regarded as a normal, albeit unfortunate, part of puberty. No one knows precisely what causes acne in adolescents, but rising hormone levels are a likely culprit, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Wash Your Face Twice a Day
Washing your face twice a day using lukewarm water and a mild soap may help prevent oil buildup that can contribute to acne. Use your fingertips to gently massage your face rather than a washcloth since it can be irritating to your skin notes KidsHealth.org. Always thoroughly remove any make-up to keep from clogging your pores.
Steer Clear of Oil
Using oil-free lotions, sunscreens and makeup can help keep acne from getting worse. Look for the words "water-based," "noncomedogenic," or "nonacnegenic" on the product label advises Kids Health.org.
Shampoo your hair often if it tends to be oily and keep it combed or pulled away from your face. Avoid wearing tight headbands or snug hats that may cause sweating.
Even the simple act of resting your hands or fingers on your face can cause sweat and oils that aggravate acne notes the Mayo Clinic. If you work near oil such as in a school lunchroom or restaurant kitchen make sure to wash your face thoroughly when you are finished.
Try Tea Tree Oil
Gels that contain five percent tea tree oil may be an effective herbal remedy for acne according to the Mayo Clinic. Be patient if you decide t give this essential oil a try since it can take a little longer to work than acne lotions that contain benzoyl peroxide.
Tea tree oil may cause a skin reaction known as contact dermatitis in some people. Symptoms can include an itchy red rash and tenderness.
Take Zinc Supplements
The mineral zinc may help improve teen acne because of its wound healing and anti-inflammatory benefits according to the Mayo Clinic. Zinc can be consumed as a supplement or added to lotions or creams and may prevent acne breakouts.
