Acne, one of the most common skin conditions, largely goes untreated. More than 40 percent of sufferers seek no treatment for the disorder, according to the Acne Resource Center. (See Reference 5) While washing the face at least twice daily is the first line of defense to control symptoms, many natural methods and home remedies offer efficient and effective treatments to reduce pustules, papules, whiteheads, blackheads and boils associated with acne.

In addition to being a flavorful fruit, apples provide antioxidants that help promote bright, clear complexions. Research indicates that apples act as detoxifiers and can battle viruses, says Dr. C. Norman Shealy, author of the book "Healing Remedies." Shealy adds that the fruit protects the skin against pollutants, "binding to toxins in the body and carrying them out." (See Reference 3)

Consuming three Red Delicious or Golden Delicious apples with skins daily, reduces blemishes and supports healing, according to Chris Gibson, author of "Acne Free in 3 Days." (Reference 1) Equally as effective as internal consumption, when applied topically directly to your skin, the vitamins, minerals and proteins present in apple juice can alleviate acne by sloughing off dead skin cells that clog the pores, according to (See Reference 4) Additionally, experiment with either an apple and honey or apple and yogurt facial mask. Grate an apple, mix it with your favored ingredient and apply it to your face for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Echinacea Root

Particularly useful for its internal immune-boosting effects, echinacea, also known as the purple cone flower, helps eradicate acne by ridding the body of microbial infections, increasing healing and reducing inflammation. In addition, the mild antiseptic has a numbing quality that eases the discomfort of cystic acne, according to "Healing Remedies." (See Reference 3)

Make a decoction by adding 3 tsp. of diced, fresh root into a pan. Add 1 cup of water, boil, and then simmer for 10 minutes. The strained decoction lasts up to three days in the refrigerator. Soak a cotton ball in the cold decoction and dab it onto your boils and other blemishes. Dr. Linda B. White, author of "The Herbal Drugstore," warns that people who are allergic to ragweed or have autoimmune disorders should refrain from using echinacea. (See Reference 2)

Horseradish root, used for generations in folk medicine, kills bacteria and accelerates healing, according to "Healing Remedies." (See Reference 3) To make a tincture, add 4 oz. of crushed, dried horseradish root, available at health food stores, to 1 pt. of vodka. Store the solution in an airtight container for two weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain the horseradish roots from the mixture and place the liquid in a dark glass airtight jar. Apply the tincture to your blemishes with a cotton ball to draw out the infection and to inhibit scarring. Be mindful, however, that although the tincture yields beneficial results, the alcohol it contains may sting.
