Extreme hormone fluctuations during pregnancy can exacerbate existing acne and cause new-onset acne in women without prior problems. Consultation with a dermatologist is ideal and provides the most effective treatment, but many effective prescription medications for acne are contraindicated during pregnancy. If you wish to forgo prescription treatment, some home remedies may provide relief for milder cases of pregnancy acne. Always consult your OB/GYN or dermatologist prior to initiating any treatment.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Topical over-the-counter, or OTC creams that contain benzoyl peroxide may provide acne relief without the need for more potent prescription medications or dermatology consultations. Consult with your OB/GYN before initiating treatment with benzoyl peroxide, because each physician has different views on its use during pregnancy. Most OTC acne products contain benzoyl peroxide, which has been used for decades to treat acne. The Illinois Teratogen Information Service states that there have been no case reports of benzoyl peroxide in association with birth defects, and that the risk of fetal malformations is likely quite low. If you wish to use benzoyl peroxide, look for a 2.5 to 5 percent cream and apply twice daily on your problem areas. Your skin may become very dry at the onset of treatment, but this will subside as your skin adjusts to treatment.

Oatmeal

If you decide to skip benzoyl peroxide treatment in favor of a more natural remedy, an oatmeal mask may help reduce breakouts during pregnancy. Oatmeal is very absorbent and helps soak up excess oil when you apply it to the skin. Pour a package of dry oatmeal into a bowl and add in small amounts of water until it becomes a paste. Using clean hands, gently spread the oatmeal over your entire face. Allow the mask to sit for 10 to 15 minutes or until dry. Rinse the mask with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with a soft towel. If you find that your skin becomes too dry after rinsing the mask, a non-comedogenic moisturizer can reduce dryness and ensure that your oil glands won't try to overcompensate by producing more excess oil.

Lemon Juice

A lemon juice toner can help reduce breakouts and give the skin a healthy glow. Lemon juice contains antioxidants that improve the health of your skin and fight free radicals, which may contribute to acne. Test a bit of lemon juice on a small area of skin before applying it to your whole face. If you have sensitive skin, undiluted lemon juice may be too strong. Dilute it with water according to your preference. Using a cotton ball, soak up a small amount of juice and spread it gently over your face as though you were using an astringent or toner. The lemon juice may sting or tingle slightly when you apply it, even when diluted, but it should be tolerable. Reapply the lemon juice each morning and night after washing with a mild cleanser.
