According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common causes of acne include overproduction of oil, called sebum, on the skin, irregular shedding of dead skin cells, irritation of hair follicles or an excessive buildup of bacteria. While acne can be uncomfortable and embarrassing for sufferers, several home remedies can help you fight the battle against acne. While supporters of these remedies claim that they work, these remedies have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Avocado Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil and Lime Juice

According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a mixture of avocado oil, rosemary essential oil and lime juice can be used topically on the skin to get rid of acne. To use avocado oil, rosemary essential oil and lime juice, mix 3 tbsp. avocado oil, one-half teaspoon rosemary essential oil and 3 tbsp. lime juice in a small bowl and stir thoroughly to combine. Apply the mixture to the affected area and leave it on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing the area with cool water. Wash with a gentle cleanser and pat the skin dry. This treatment can be used every day as long as it does not irritate your skin or make your acne worse. Note that you should always mix essential oils at a ratio of 10 parts carrier oil or liquid to one part essential oil to avoid skin irritation.

Rose Water, Lemon Juice and Lemon Skin Scrub

According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Food and Home Remedies Since 1939," a mixture of natural rose water, lemon juice and lemon skin can be used as a scrub on the skin to help fight acne. To use rose water, lemon juice and lemon skin, make a mixture of 4 tbsp. rose water, 4 tbsp. lemon juice and the peel of one-half lemon. In a blender or food processor, process the mixture on high speed until it becomes a moderately thin paste. Rinse your skin with cool, clean water and gently scrub the mixture onto the affected area for 45 to 60 seconds. Rinse your skin with cool water and wash the area with a gentle cleanser after using the scrub. Pat the area dry with a clean towel before applying your regular moisturizer. This remedy can be used daily as long as it does not bother your skin.

White Sugar, Brown Sugar and Mint Leaf Scrub

A homemade scrub prepared with white sugar, brown sugar and fresh mint leaves can be used on the skin to help get rid of acne, according to Sachs. To use this mixture, combine 1 tbsp. white sugar, 1 tbsp. brown sugar and one-half tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves in a small bowl or container. Wet the skin with cool water and massage the scrub into the skin for 15 to 20 seconds. In the shower, rinse the skin with cool water and wash with a gentle cleanser. Pat the skin dry and apply your regular moisturizer if you use one. This treatment can be used twice per day as long as no irritation occurs.
