Acne is a common skin disorder characterized by pimples, particularly on the face, neck, chest and back, caused when hair follicles beneath the skin become clogged. The skin condition can strike at any age but is seen most often in teenagers and can be emotionally traumatic, although it is not generally a serious health problem. Although there are a wide array of prescription and over-the-counter medications for acne, some home remedies appear to be quite effective.

Steaming Away the Oil

In "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II," author Sid Kircheimer passes along a remedy for oily skin that comes from New York City-based dermatologist Karen E. Burke. She suggests cleansing the face with steam from the tea-like mixture created when 2 tbsp. of Swiss Kriss, an herbal laxative, is steeped in 2 to 3 quarts of boiling water. Once the brew has been removed from the burner, place your head over the escaping steam for one to three minutes, and then rinse your face thoroughly with cold water. Burke says that steaming the face once or twice weekly opens the pores and allows excess oils to drain off. Most health stores carry Swiss Kriss, which is also available online.

Oily skin, in and of itself, does not cause acne, but the skin disorder does occur most frequently in those whose skin is oily. This oil is more properly known as sebum and is an oily/waxy blend that is secreted by the microscopic sebaceous glands that are found in the skin tissue of all mammals. People with overactive sebaceous glands have skin that is oilier than normal and more prone to acne.

Thyme, Liquid Soap and Onion Juice

Dried thyme, liquid soap and onion juice, which are likely to be found in most homes, are the key ingredients in three home remedies for acne. Citing the astringent properties of thyme, master herbalist Jude C. Todd, author of "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies," recommends brewing up a facial rinse for acne treatment by steeping 3 to 4 tbsp. dried thyme in 1½ cups of boiling water for 30 minutes. After the mixture has cooled, strain and bottle it. Refrigerate the mixture and use it daily as a facial rinse.

For an overnight mask to dry up acne eruptions, coat the area with a small amount of liquid soap that has been diluted with warm water. Leave on overnight and rinse off thoroughly in the morning. Because this remedy can dry out skin very quickly, Todd recommends against using it more than once weekly. She also points out that fresh onion juice, applied to affected areas for a period of 15 minutes, can help to dry up acne lesions.

Home Remedies from India

Rekha Deshpandey, author of "Home Remedies," offers a few acne remedies drawn from ayurveda, a traditional medicine practice used in India for thousands of years. Apply a drop or two of tea tree oil to affected areas three times daily, leaving it on for 60 minutes each time. The oil has potent antibacterial properties and can ward off acne by preventing the infection that plays a role in its origins. As an internal preventive measure, Deshpandey suggests drinking a half-cup of aloe vera juice daily to keep acne pimples at bay.
