A Home Remedy for Acne and Dark Spots

Overview

Acne can be an embarrassing condition to treat. Certainly, it's common, but walking into a drugstore to buy an acne cream can feel humiliating. To avoid this hassle, you can treat acne from the comfort of your own home. Several home remedies exist for healing and reducing the appearance of acne and the dark spots it leaves behind. You just have to be resourceful.

Step 1

Wash your face every morning and night. Use a nondrying soap to remove oil, dirt, and dead skin cells, massaging it onto wet skin with your fingertips. This will help prevent your pores from clogging and causing new blemishes. Rinse well with warm water.

Step 2

Take a zinc supplement to cut back on inflammation and reduce the redness of your acne. Take this supplement once a day with a meal for reduced breakouts and skin irritation. Between 60 to 90 mg a day is best, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Step 3

Remove your makeup every night to prevent clogging of pores. Use only noncomedogenic makeups that won't contribute to acne breakouts, and use an alcohol-free makeup remover to prevent drying of the skin. Go without makeup as much as possible to give your skin time to breathe.

Step 4

Apply tea tree oil to your blemishes once a day to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. According to the Mayo Clinic, tea tree oil can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide solutions. The results might be slower, but the overall effect is still the same.
