Vitamin or Herbal Treatment for Acne
The Acne Resource Center claims acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States. Onset of acne usually occurs during the late teens through to the early 20s. It can, however, develop in 40- to 50-year-old women who are going through menopause. Some herbs and vitamins may help combat acne.
According to the Acne Resource Center, elevated levels of hormones called androgens often cause acne. These hormones stimulate production of the oil-producing glands in your dermis--your skin's middle layer. This can lead to an oily build-up that clogs your pores and leads to acne. There are a number of different types of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules.
According to Vitamins Diary, vitamin A is good for acne because it can help to reduce the production of sebum, which can cause blocked pores. Vitamin A also has antioxidant properties, which help to eliminate toxins and free radicals. It may also reduce fine lines. Natural sources of vitamin A include apricots, mangoes, carrots, broccoli, peas, collards, red pepper, tomatoes, turnips, milk, beef and chicken.
Vitamins Diary also recommends vitamin B6 for acne because it can help your body metabolize fats and balance the production of oil in your skin. Natural sources of vitamin B6 include tuna, bell peppers, chicken, cod, cabbage, turnip greens and chard.
According to Herbal Info, aloe vera gel can help cure acne. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties, which means is can reduce the swelling, soreness and redness of acne. It can also help tighten your skin and reduce the size of large, open pores. Aloe vera moisturizes your skin without leaving behind an oily film like some other moisturizers do.
Herbal Info also recommends lavender oil for the treatment of acne. Lavender is gentle on your skin, and you can directly apply the plant's essential oil. It soothes soreness and also helps your skin to heal without leaving any scars behind. Lavender oil also has antibacterial properties, so it can prevent infection and blocked pores.
