Acne is one of the most common skin conditions there is, affecting 40 million to 50 million Americans, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It is most common in teenagers, affecting about 85 percent of them, according to the AAD. While there are many over-the-counter and prescription medications for treating acne, there are also herbal solutions for acne that have been medically proved to be effective.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil from the Australian tea tree, Melaleuca alternifornia, that has has been shown to be an effective topical acne treatment. A 1990 study at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Australia showed that a gel containing 5 percent tea tree oil was nearly as effective as a 5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream. Although it took longer for the tea tree oil gel to produce a reduction in inflamed and noninflamed lesions, it also produced fewer side effects than the benzoyl peroxide cream.

All 30 patients showed at least moderate improvement, and the study authors remarked that guggul had a "remarkable effect on acne vulgaris."

However, there is no definitive medical evidence that any of these treatments works.
