Many types of acne treatments are available to choose from. Acupuncture is one that tends to go unnoticed when it comes to acne treatment. It is believed that hormonal imbalance can cause the body to secrete more oils, resulting in acne. If you have tried everything from creams to scrubs or prescription medication, then it won't hurt to give acupuncture a shot.

Best results for the treatment of acne are obtained by combining acupuncture with another type of acne treatment. Other treatments include diet change. Cut out sugars, foods with saturated and trans fats, and some people believe chocolate, though this has yet to be proven. Also unproven is the belief that high calorie intake result if more breakouts. According to saturated and trans fats contribute to oily skin. Most saturated and trans fats are found in meats, dairy and poultry. The body still requires other essential fatty acids, which come from fish, flaxseed or hempseed oil.

Including vitamins into your diet helps as well. Vitamin A, Zinc and green tea have proven successful in some people.

Natural Method

Some patients do not like the idea of medication or cannot take certain medications. Many patients have exceeded all other possible methods and some just aren't comfortable with surgery or laser treatment. There are a lot of possible side effects when it comes to topical creams, ingested medications or surgery. Acupuncture is natural, and because of this, it is rare that there will be any negative side effects. The only minor drawbacks is that is it costly, there is no guarantee that it will work for you, and some people fear the pain and the usage of needles.

The two different kinds of acupuncture treatments for acne are electro acupuncture and auricular acupuncture. In acupuncture, the acupuncturist places eight to 12 needles in specific locations on the ear for up to 30 minutes.

There is little research to prove acupuncture's ability to treat acne. Some individuals and small cases have reported improvement. A study published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine showed after eight to 15 treatments the majority of patients saw a reduction in their acne. Another study showed 61 patients with acne received nine treatments and most patients experienced noticeable improvement, while half also healed completely.
