How to Avoid a Whitehead

Whiteheads are actually clogged pores that develop below your skin's surface. Dead skin, bacteria and facial oils (sebum) are usually the cause of the clog. As the pore continues to fill, it expands to form a whitehead. Princeton University Health Services explains that to avoid whiteheads, it is important to prevent your pores from clogging. Avoiding the development of whiteheads includes a combination of lifestyle and hygiene changes.

Step 1

Wash your skin at least twice a day using a mild cleanser. When you wake up in the morning and before bedtime are ideal times, according to Brown University Health Education. Washing your skin will help keep it free of the bacteria and oils that cause whiteheads.

Step 2

Massage an exfoliating cream into your skin once a week using your clean fingertips to lift away dead skin cells. Rinse away the exfoliating cream with cool water afterward.

Step 3

Apply a lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to your skin daily. Applied with a cotton ball, either lotion will help remove excess oils from your skin, reducing clogged pores.
