Overview

For more than 40 years, a popular method of treating acne among dermatologists has been the use of dry ice. Often called dry ice cryotherapy, this is only used on facial acne and should not be used as a treatment for large areas of affected skin. It is a simple treatment that can be done in a quick visit to the dermatologist's office, or you can do it on your own with proper care. Using dry ice with minimize the presence of acne scars and shrink your pores to limit the amount of oil that can clog your skin and encourage the development of acne.

Step 1

Wash your skin twice daily using lukewarm water for one week leading up to treatment. Do not use soap, as this has chemicals that may harm your skin when dry ice is applied to them. Also avoid using any topical lotions or creams.

Step 2

Wrap your dry ice in a cheesecloth and crush it using a hammer. Dip the cheesecloth into a bowl holding 65 O.P. ethyl alcohol (which you should be able to find at a drug store or department store). The alcohol will help draw oil away from your skin.

Step 3

Dab your skin with the cheesecloth, holding it on each location for 3 to 5 seconds before continuing. Revisit each spot touched three times during the treatment. Stop immediately if you start to feel a stinging pain.

Step 4

Repeat this process once a week until conditions improve, then gradually reduce the frequency of these treatments to once every other week, once a month, and finally none at all.
