How to Treat Scarring from Alopecia How to Treat Scarring from Alopecia

Overview

Scarring alopecia, also known as cicatricial alopecia, happens when the sufferer is exposed to burns of the scalp, radiation, or sarcoid cysts on the scalp. This causes the hair follicle to swell as the hair starts to fall out, and eventually the follicles are completely inactive. Hair regrowth is impossible because of severe scarring. Treatment options are available to minimize scarring.

Step 1

Apply a topical corticosteroid to your scalp as directed by your dermatologist. More severe cases may require frequent application to minimize swelling and damage to the tissue. Corticosteroids also inhibit immune function responsible for scarring, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Step 2

Take antibiotics for the full course as prescribed by your dermatologist. Antibiotics can help reduce inflammation and scarring, and can prevent infection of the hair follicle.

Step 3

Apply sunscreen to the exposed scalp when enjoying outdoor activity. This allows for the scarring to heal while preventing further scalp damage. According to NIAMS, sunscreen is important for the scalp and all other exposed parts of the body.

Step 4

Consider hair restoration surgery. In some cases, scalp removal of small bald patches may be needed to increase success of hair transplantation. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, the scar tissue can be removed through surgical excision leaving a smaller transplant area during the procedure. Discuss options with your doctor as well as pre op and recovery time.
