Blackheads are only one aspect of acne. Whiteheads, postules and cysts are other elements as well. Blackheads result when pores are plugged with dirt, sebum or skin cells. Picking at them could cause an infection and rupturing beneath the skin surface, resulting in a cyst that can leave permanent scaring. Treating and preventing them require diligence in your skin care routine.

Open Pores

To remove the blackheads, you will need to open or enlarge your pores. Using a facial sauna or hot shower can open pores and start to bring the blockage up to the surface. You might also consider adding tea tree essential oil to the water to help treat and prevent infection. According to the Mayo Clinic, tea tree oil has been shown to help improve acne with few side effects. Consult your physician and stop using any products if an irritation or allergic reaction occurs

After your pores have been opened, it is time to gently exfoliate to remove the excess dead skin cells before they can settle back in to the pores and cause additional blackheads. You can exfoliate with a soft washcloth using a circular motion. Alternatively, you could use ground almonds or uncooked oatmeal as a scrub as well. Never rub harshly because doing so could irritate your skin and cause acne to spread and become more severe.

Draw Out Impurities

Cosmetic clays in the form of fullers earth or French green make natural facial masks. Simply add enough water to form a thick paste and apply it to your skin, avoiding the eye area. When you leave these clays on to dry, they absorb oil and draw out impurities from your skin, including blockages. If you use a clay mask more than once a week, you risk overdrying and irritating your skin. Mix only enough clay for each application because wet clay will not store well and can grow bacteria.

Wash and Tone Skin

Keep excess oils from blocking your pores by washing your face once to twice a day. You should use a mild soap to prevent overdrying and irritation. Try washing first thing in the morning to clear out the oils produced overnight and then again right before bedtime to remove any makeup, sweat and dirt you have collected during the day. Dry your face with a soft towel by patting it to prevent scratching your skin. After your face is thoroughly dry, use a toner such as witch hazel applied with a clean cotton ball to shrink your pores.

Use Cream or Lotion

If you have moderate to severe acne, you may wish to talk with your doctor about prescription medications. If not, University of Maryland Medical Center experts suggest applying a lotion or cream that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to keep your pores from being blocked by excess oils. These products can be harsh and lead to some skin peeling. You could also just moisturize your skin using a cream or lotion that is non-comedogenic and will not block pores.
