Home Mixture for Removing Blackheads
Blackheads are one kind of acne you may experience periodically, even as an adult. Clogged pores lead to acne, with blackheads representing the first stage. Home mixtures can work as either face masks or spot treatments and may prevent blackheads from becoming larger pimples or from erupting into a group of pimples. Always check with your dermatologist before attempting any home treatments, which are not sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration. Results will vary. The dermatologist can verify whether your treatment is safe and may recommend a stronger medication or treatment option than home mixtures can provide.
As either a spot treatment or an ingredient in a face mask, tea tree essential oil is effective on blackheads, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The UMMC attributes its ability to treat acne to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds. Herbalist Dina Falconi also recommends echinacea root and powdered myrrh to kill bacteria related to oozing blackheads. Clays help dry up blackheads. Use green clay for the most powerful drawing action or white clay if you have sensitive skin. Grains such as wheat, rice and oats can help exfoliate the skin and cleanse the face of oil and dirt to prevent future blackheads. To moisten blackhead mixtures, witch hazel and vinegar provide astringent and cleansing action for oily, acne-prone skin.
The online resource Medical News Today suggests beginning blackhead treatment by steaming your face to open pores. Hold your head over hot water for several minutes, with a towel draped over your head and the bowl or sink to create a steam tent.
Tie your hair back and wear old clothes if using the home mixture as a face mask. Add dry ingredients to a mixing bowl and blend in the wet ingredients until you achieve a paste-like consistency. Spread the mask on your face or simply dab the mixture on individual blackheads. Leave this on for at least 20 minutes. Rinse and gently pat dry. Spot treatments may be left on overnight.
Mix together 1 tbsp. each of oats, brown rice and calendula and 1 tsp. echinacea root. Process these ingredients in a blender or coffee bean grinder. When they reach a powdery consistency, add 3 tbsp. clay and 1/2 tsp. myrrh powder. Put about 1 tbsp. of this dry mixture in a bowl and reserve the rest for future use. Moisten with 1 tbsp. witch hazel or cider vinegar and 2 to 3 drops tea tree essential oil. Apply this to individual blackheads or to your whole face. Leave it on overnight or for at least 20 minutes.
Sensitive Skin Option
If the herbal blackhead treatment described in the "basic mixture" section irritates your skin, Falconi recommends adding 2 tsp. honey and reducing the witch hazel to 1 tsp. Replacing cloves and echinacea with extra clay also reduces the "tingling" effect, which some skins can't handle.
If you can't find herbs such as echinacea root or myrrh powder in a health food store, make a simple blackhead treatment with equal parts whole wheat flour and clay, and add enough witch hazel and cider vinegar to moisten the mixture. Add 2 to 3 drops of acne-fighting essential oils if you own them. Good choices include tea tree, lavender, lemongrass or orange essential oils.
