Acne scars are caused by severe acne, and for some, hereditary genes play a role in acne scarring, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The AAD states that some people inherit genes that predispose them to scarring. Fortunately, there are products that help reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree gels containing 5 percent tea tree oil are comparable to other lotions such as benzoyl peroxide, although tea tree oil may take a bit longer to reduce acne scars, according to dermatologist Lawrence E. Gibson with the Mayo Clinic. There is some concern with topical tea tree oil, as it may cause breast development in young boys. Avoid using tea tree oil if you suffer from acne rosacea, as it can worsen symptoms, says the Mayo Clinic. Tea tree oil may take longer to reduce acne scars, it has less side effects than benzoyl peroxide, such as skin irritation, stinging and burning, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Zinc Supplements

Zinc aids in healing wounds, boosting your immune system and reducing inflammation, according to the Mayo Clinic. Zinc is found in cereal, fish, poultry and red meats. The recommended daily allowance is between 8 and 11 mg, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Taking zinc supplements with meals to reduce side effects such as nausea and a bad taste in your mouth. If you still experience a bad taste with it, the Mayo Clinic states that you can add zinc to lotions and creams to help reduce acne breakouts. Using zinc along with a topical antibiotic may help improve results.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is found naturally in sugar cane, but when you apply it to your skin, it aids in removing dead skin cells and helping to unclog pores. Using glycolic acid can reduce the appearance of acne scars but the Mayo Clinic warns about side effects such as mild stinging and skin irritation and redness. Use a chemical peel containing glycolic acid, recommends DermNet NZ. A chemical peel will help remove the surface layer of your skin, which consequently removes the top layer of your scar, allowing the glycolic acid to aid in the reduction of acne scars.
