Overview

Acne poses serious cosmetic concern in adults. Women are more prone to hormonal acne due to an imbalance of the female hormone estrogen. In some cases, testosterone, also produced in women, increases to cause acne flare ups. Balancing hormone production is key to reducing hormonal acne flare ups. This may be done through medication or small changes in skin care routines.

Step 1

Wash the skin daily with a gentle cleanser. Avoid scrubbing as this may irritate and worsen acne symptoms. Pat skin dry after washing instead of rubbing skin dry. This will help keep moisture in the skin where it is needed.

Step 2

Use cosmetics and creams labeled "noncomedogenic." These products do not cause or worsen acne breakouts and are usually oil free.

Step 3

Apply a toner containing salicyclic acid or glycolic acid to the skin once or twice daily. Both these ingredients clean pores by removing trapped sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells that make up pimples. Apply a light moisturizer after use since these ingredients do have a drying effect on the skin.

Step 4

Take oral contraceptives as directed by your physician. Oral contraceptives increase hormone production and help regulate periods. The hormone increase will alleviate acne flare ups and improve your mood. Antiandrogens may also be prescribed to decrease oil production in the pores and reduce risk of acne flare ups.
