Proper Way to Get Rid of Blackheads
When pores become clogged with sebum, an oil produced naturally by the skin, acne forms. If the sebum remains under the skin, the resulting acne is a pimple, otherwise known as a whitehead. If the sebum comes into contact with oxygen, it darkens, forming a small black bump known as a blackhead. This happens most often on the nose. Many people opt to remove blackheads for cosmetic reasons, but they do not all know the proper way to do so.
Rub a facial cleanser into your skin gently with a finger. Use a product made from salicylic acid. According to the Mayo Clinic, these cleansers exfoliate, open up pores and weaken the blackheads. You can also use a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide, which the Mayo Clinic also suggests for blackhead removal, because it dries out the sebum and exfoliates--all while working as an antimicrobial agent.
Rinse your face with hot water. This will open up your pores and facilitate proper blackhead removal.
Dry your face thoroughly with a clean towel. It is better for your skin to use gentle patting motions, rather than abrasive scrubbing motions.
Use your blackhead remover. This may be either an adhesive pore strip or a thin tube with a loop at the end. If using a pore strip, follow the package directions, as each brand has its own specifications. If you are using a tube, place the loop over a blackhead and press down slowly and gently. Wipe away the sebum with a clean tissue.
Wipe your looped blackhead remover with a sterilizing agent, like rubbing alcohol, between each blackhead extraction.
Wash your face again with the facial cleanser to kill bacteria and avoid any infections.
See your dermatologist if you are unable to remove blackheads at home successfully. They can perform blackhead extractions and employ other methods like glycolic acid chemical peels, if necessary.
