Overview

Whenever the pores of the skin become blocked by oils, sebum and bacteria, it can result in the appearance of blackheads. Although they are called "black," blackheads actually turn brown when they become oxidized by the air. Blackheads can make the skin look uneven and speckled, which can diminish the clarity of the complexion when left untreated. Luckily, there are a few blackhead treatments that can eliminate blockages quickly.

Step 1

Clean your face with a soap formulated for sensitive skin types. Washing your skin with a regular soap can cause inflammation on the skin, which can exacerbate blackheads. This is because regular soaps contain strong chemical ingredients, such as artificial perfumes, dyes and additives. Wet your skin well with water and lather your hands with a sensitive skin soap. Apply the lather gently to your skin, avoiding rubbing it in. After the lather has been spread around your skin, rinse it off with water. Repeat two times daily to clean the skin effectively without causing inflammation.

Step 2

Purge your skin with castor oil, a non-comedogenic oil that flushes out pores. Pour 1 tsp. of castor oil into your hands, and gently spread the oil onto your face. Massage in the oil with your finger tips using a circular motion, applying a deeper pressure around the areas that contain the most blackheads. After three minutes, fill a large bowl with nearly boiling water. Sit the bowl onto a flat surface, such as a countertop, and hold your head 12 to 18 inches above it. Drape a clean towel over your head, which will target the steam from the water onto your face. After five to seven minutes, wipe off the oil using a damp washcloth. The trapped oils and sebum in your skin will bond to the castor oil, and will leave the skin with the castor oil when the steam opens the pores. Purge your skin with castor oil daily.

Step 3

Increase skin cell turnover with a compress high in vitamin C, such as concentrated lemon juice. According to the University of Maryland, vitamin C encourages the development of new skin cells while increasing the skin's ability to slough off dead skin cells. This helps keep the pores clear and blackhead-free. Soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, and apply the pads onto your skin. Use one pad for the chin, one pad for each side of the face, and two pads for the forehead area. Leave the pads on your face for at least 10 minutes, then remove them to let the skin dry. Use lemon juice compress once per day to increase skin cell turnover.
