Home Remedies to Get Rid of Blackheads
Blackheads, whiteheads and pimples are all symptoms of acne. Acne occurs when the oil glands produce an excess of sebum, or oil. When dead skin cells mix with the oil, your hair follicles become plugged, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. If the follicle is clogged near the the surface of the skin and the air reaches it, it darkens, thus the term "blackhead." Blackheads can usually be removed safety at home.
Pore strips, which are available at drugstores, may effectively remove blackheads. Place a strip over the affected area, such as your chin or nose, for the recommended period of time. Pull off the strip, and you will see the debris that has been extracted from your skin.
You can safely remove a blackhead by hand if you use gentle force with your fingers, preferably while wearing soft gloves. Placing tissue over your fingers will also suffice. Use the minimum amount of pressure needed to extract the debris.
Epsom Salts and Iodine
A mixture of 1/4 cup hot water, 1 tsp. Epsom salts and four drops of iodine may help loosen existing blackheads. Dip a cotton ball into the preparation when it is warm to the touch and apply it to the blackhead and surrounding skin. Once dry, carefully remove with a damp washcloth.
Soak a napkin in 1½ cups water mixed with a 1/2 tbsp. boric acid powder. Press the napkin onto your skin and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Remove with warm water and soap.
Honey and Egg Whites
Blend of 1 tsp. honey with an egg white and dip a cotton swab into the mixture. Apply it to your blackheads and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. This and other home remedies may still require a manual extraction with your fingers, but the dirt should be yielding.
A fine loop extractor, which has small loops on both ends, can assist you in your efforts to safely remove blackheads yet keep the surrounding skin out of harm's way. Position a loop over the blackhead, then press gently to remove it.
