Foods That Trigger Herpes Foods That Trigger Herpes

Herpes is a virus that affects the immune system and causes problems, such as cold sores and genital warts. According to Herpes.org, changes in our stress levels and even in the foods we eat can cause the virus to shift from being dormant in the body to breaking out. Some foods are more likely than others to cause an outbreak, because they trigger the herpes virus to activate.

Candy

According to Herpes.org, excessive sugar consumption is one of the leading causes of herpes virus outbreaks. This is because sugar reduces the ability of the white blood cells in the body to kill harmful microorganisms. Most candies, whether hard, chewy or gummy, are full of sugar. Herpes.org also states that sugar can hinder the body's ability to absorb B vitamins, which help the body cope with stress. Since stress can also trigger the herpes virus, candies full of sugar are not recommended for people carrying the herpes virus.

Chocolate

In addition to being high in sugar, chocolate is high in an amino acid called arginine, according to Herpes.org. The website explains that arginine can trigger herpes outbreaks because it causes the herpes virus to multiply rapidly. Chocolate should be limited by people living with the herpes virus, as it may exacerbate their symptoms.

Peanuts

Peanuts are another food high in arginine, according to Herpes.org. Peanuts are also low in the amino acid lysine, which helps keep the herpes virus dormant in the body. Herpes.org recommends taking a lysine supplement if you eat peanuts, or at least eating a food that is high in lysine, such as meat, at the same time you eat peanuts so that the herpes triggering effect is minimized.

Whole-Wheat Bread

According to the November 1987 "Journal of the American Dietetic Association," whole grains, such as brown rice, whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat tortillas, oats and barley, are very high in the amino acid arginine. Whole-wheat bread is especially high in arginine because it is often fortified with additional vitamins and amino acids. People with the herpes virus may want to choose to eat basic white bread instead of whole-wheat bread.
