Foods That Trigger Acne
Acne is one of the most common conditions of the skin, resulting from clogged pores due to an overactive oil gland. Although many medical experts deny a link between acne and food triggers, those that suffer from the condition may lessen the frequency and severity of outbreaks by avoiding certain foods.
Sugar and Chocolate
Chocolate is probably the most referenced food source that triggers an acne outbreak, although clinical studies have been mixed in proving a link. The Archives of Dermatology published a study that found that foods that are high on the Glycemic Index scale, typically refined carbohydrates such as sugar, could cause an outbreak of acne due to rising hormone levels.
Some research has shown a high dairy intake is linked to acne breakouts. A Harvard study found that teens who drank more than two servings of milk a day were 44 percent more likely to suffer from severe acne. The cause is thought to be an increase in growth hormone which causes the sebaceous glands in the skin to become clogged.
Iodine may be a factor in acne outbreaks, as it is excreted through the skin's oil glands, which may irritate the skin of those already prone to pimples Iodine is found in fish and shellfish because the sea water contains iodine. Another source is iodized salt, which is a component of many processed and canned foods.
Caffeine and Alcohol
Caffeine is thought to trigger acne breakouts by affecting the levels of hormones that the body produces. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and chocolate are all source of caffeine. Alcohol also causes a hormone increase, particularly that of testosterone, which can lead to more frequent acne outbreaks.
Skin problems are common with mild allergic reactions to foods, particularly milk and eggs. Rashes or acne may occur because the immune system is attempting to fight off a perceived toxin. Diagnosis by an allergist can confirm the link between food allergies and severe acne.
