The stomach contains acids that breaks down the foods you eat, aiding in the digestion process to help the stomach empty. Normally, those acids stay safely in the stomach, but when too much acid is produced in the stomach, it can seep up into the esophagus--causing that burning, uncomfortable sensation known as heartburn. There are a number of foods known to increase acid production in the stomach and cause heartburn--but by limiting those foods, you can alleviate uncomfortable heartburn.

Beverages

Certain beverages and ingredients in them can boost acid production. Caffeine is a major culprit, says the National Heartburn Alliance. Any sodas, coffee, tea or other beverages that contain caffeine will increase acidity and irritation. Even coffee and soda without caffeine may also boost acid production. Orange juice and other citrus fruit-based juices, as well as milk and wine, are also to blame.

Fruits

Fruits that are naturally high in acid will only add to the acid in your stomach. Citrus fruits--like oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes--contain a lot of acid and should be eaten judiciously to avoid overproduction of acid. Tomatoes are very acidic. It's also important to be wary of the many foods that contain tomatoes, including ketchup, tomato sauce and tomato paste.

Proteins and Dairy

Many forms of protein contain acid, so organ meats like liver should be avoided. Eggs are another acidic food that will raise levels in the stomach. Cheeses that have aged, sour cream and buttermilk--and foods made with buttermilk--are also high in acid.
