Foods That Cause Hypoglycemia Foods That Cause Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a condition in which you have an abnormally low level of blood sugar, or glucose, which is your body's main source of energy. If your blood sugar level becomes too low, you may experience symptoms of hypoglycemia. These include confusion, unusual behavior, visual problems, loss of consciousness, tremors, anxiety, sweating and hunger.

Foods Low In Fiber

Foods that are low in fiber have been stripped of their bran component. Fiber acts to add satiety to meals and allows sugar and other molecules to enter your bloodstream at a steady rate. Low-fiber foods include white breads, white pastas, white rice, and commercially prepared baked goods such as cakes, pies, and cookies. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that you eat foods rich in soluble fiber, such as flaxseed and oat bran, to allow a slower stream of sugar into your blood. This can help normalize your sugar levels.

High-Fat Foods

Foods high in fat may delay the influx of sugar into your bloodstream and this can cause a decrease in blood sugar. High-fat foods stay in your stomach longer and include fatty cuts of beef, full-fat dairy products and commercially baked goods such as cakes, pies, and donuts. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that you choose foods lower in fat such as lean cuts of poultry and meat, low-fat dairy products, beans, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables.

Alcohol

Alcohol can cause a decline in your blood sugar level. This can trigger hypoglycemic symptoms since you are not receiving adequate energy transport of nutrients and oxygen to your brain. To prevent hypoglycemia symptoms in your body, you may need to avoid or limit alcoholic beverages or other sources of alcohol.
