Overview

Esophageal reflux is a condition that occurs when stomach acids seep back into your esophagus. After you eat, food travels down your esophagus until it reaches your esophageal sphincter muscle. This muscle is responsible for letting food into the stomach and then closing behind it. If the muscle becomes weak, it does not close properly and stomach contents leak back into your esophagus causing burning and pain. Avoid foods that might cause increased episodes of reflux and use discretion when consuming questionable foods. Do not eat or drink anything that causes you to experience burning or discomfort.

Spicy Foods

Do not eat spicy foods, such as black pepper, chili powder, curry, garlic, onions and hot peppers. When dining out, choose restaurants that offer a variety of foods and avoid ethnic restaurants that serve spicy food, such as Mexican, Thai and Indian.

Fatty Foods

Avoid meats that are high in fat, such as bacon, ham and sausage. These foods stay in your stomach longer and promote increased stomach acid production. Do not eat full-fat dairy products and choose low-fat or non-fat dairy instead. Do not eat fried foods, such as french fries and onion rings, and avoid greasy snacks, such as potato chips and buttered popcorn.

Acidic Foods

Do not eat foods that contain high levels of acid and can trigger symptoms. This includes tomatoes and tomato-based products, such as tomato juice, tomato sauce or tomato paste, as well as citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons and limes, including citrus juices.

Caffeine and Alcohol

Do not eat or drink products containing caffeine, including coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeinated sodas and chocolate. Also avoid alcoholic beverages, which weaken the sphincter muscle. For special occasions, you might get away with consuming a small amount of alcohol, but not everyone can tolerate it.
